The Project

«Design, installation, implementation, maintenance, technical management, and operational support of the Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) for urban transport in Athens, implemented through Public-Private Partnership (PPP), awarded to HST S.A.»

Implemented at all public transport modes (thermal buses, electric buses – trolley buses, urban railways-metro, tramways – trams and the suburban railway), operating in Attica Region. Co-funded by the Regional Operational Program Attica – ERDF, and funds from HST S.A. 51%. For availability period, HST assumes 100% of system administration and maintenance cost for 10 years.

Athens Automatic Fare Collection System is the new era for Public Transport in Attica Region and the first high technology project with specialized equipment – software and services provision, through PPP in Greece and one of the one of the largest integrated Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) projects using smart cards in Europe.

Benefits:

For the passenger:

  1. Ease of purchase and use of smart cards.
  2. improvement of access to the PT services.
  3. Reloading via smartphones & credit cards.
  4. Introduction of new fare policy (New, attractive fare products tailored to passenger needs).
  5. Flexibility from the use of additional services.
  6. Security: replacement in case of damage, loss, or theft.

For Transport Authorities & Operators:

  1. Integrated tickets. Implementation of more flexible and fair pricing policies for PT trips.
  2. Flexible introduction of new fare products.
  3. Effective control of ticket sales and validation system
  4. Reduction of Fare Evasion to benchmark EU levels
  5. Better transport planning based on the actual transport demand.
  6. Improved apportioning of revenues between transport operators.
  7. Better image for PT.
