Product information

The e-ticketing system supports two product categories:

  • Fixed-term products, all types of products (from the 90-minute single ticket to the 365 day-pass for one year).
  • Stored value (euros), which you may use as an e-wallet from which the value of one way journey is deducted (e.g. €1.20 for a one way journey or a one way journey to the airport by bus or metro).

1. Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket: this is a reloadable ticket valid for multiple journeys that you can top up with fare products meeting your personal public transport needs (e.g. single, daily, 5-day tickets etc.) based on your entitlement to discount fare pricing.

2. Anonymous ATH.ENA Card: this card includes all fare products with duration of less than a month that can be also loaded on the Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket plus the option to store money value that can be automatically used for paying individual journeys. This type of card does not provide you the possibility to load any discount fare product on it.

3. Personalized ATH.ENA Card: this card includes all fare products, tickets, 30/30/180/365-day passes including all discount fare products plus the option to store money value.

The main differences between the Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket and the ATH.ENA Card are the following:

  • The Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket may be loaded with only one short term fare product (e.g. 90-minute single tickets, daily, 5-day, tourist tickets etc.) and has a limited lifespan.
  • The Personalized ENA Card may be simultaneously loaded with up to two fare products AND stored value, that is with long term fare products (e.g. 30/ 90/ 180 or 365-day pass),
    • and/ or with short term fare products yet keeping in mind that only one product may be valid at each given time, meaning that the first product must expire before using the next one,
    • and/ or with stored value, that is with money that can be used as an e-wallet to buy a certain ticket and/ or fare product.
  • The Anonymous ATH.ENA Card may be loaded with up to two short term fare products, that is you may simultaneously top it up with two ticket types yet keeping in mind that only one product may be valid at each given time, meaning that the first product must expire before using the next one, and /or with stored value, that is with money that can be used as an e-wallet to buy a certain ticket and/or fare product.

Therefore, choosing between a Personalized or Anonymous ATH.ENA Card and a Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket is up to your personal public transport needs and the suitability of the available fare products thereto.

If you are a daily/ regular passenger or entitled to discount fare pricing, then a Personalized ATH.ENA Card is the right choice for you. If you are a frequent or occasional passenger, you can pick either a Personalized or an Anonymous ATH.ENA Card. Then again, if you are just visiting Athens or you do not use public transport that often, a Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket suits you best.

Personalized ATH.ENA Cards are issued by specific ticket counters registered in the system, y presenting your national ID Card* and your social security number (AMKA) in a hardcopy form (e.g. copy of your health booklet or a printout from https://www.amka.gr/AMKAGR ).

*In case that you do not have an ID Card, Passport or SSN, you may submit any legal document indicating your personal identification number (e.g. ID number).

The issue of your card will be greatly shortened if you have already filled out the online application available here and printed your given QR code , before reaching the ticket counter.

Write down and safely store your 8-digit PIN Code. You will need this in case you lose your card, so that you do not also lose its content (tickets or stored value).

E-ticket readers (for both Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket and ATH.ENA Card) differ from one public transport mean to the other.
Bus, trolley-bus and tramway ticket readers are blue bearing a display, while the ticket touch area is marked by 4 curved lines.
At Athens Metro stations, ticket readers are located at the entrance gate which opens upon validation of ticket or card.

CONTACTLESS VALIDATION

Validation using the smart ticket readers is contactless and needs to be done only once by passing your ATH.ENA Card or Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket at a few centimeters distance from the ticket reader which registers on the ticket or card the time of its first validation as well as of all other validations until expiration of its validity term.

Moreover, when validating a ticket or card, the ticket reader display shows the remaining time until expiration of fare validity (or the remaining potentially stored value). This means that the ticket reader not only validates the ticket or card but also informs the user.

ATH.ENA Ticket or Card is to be validated EACH TIME we board a bus, trolley-bus or tramway and EACH TIME we pass (enter and exit) through a subway station gate.

Always upon successful validation, the bus, trolley-bus and tramway ticket reader displays 4 flashing green LED indicators along with the word “Successful” (into Greek) followed by a sound indicating successful validation. The display also shows the remaining time of fare validity and the remaining potentially stored value.
Likewise, the subway station gate ticket readers display the remaining time of fare validity or the remaining potentially stored value, and 4 flashing green LED indicators along with the word “Successful” (both into Greek and English) followed by a sound indicating successful validation.

Always upon failed validation the bus, trolley-bus and tramway ticket reader displays 4 flashing red LED indicators along with the word “Failed” (into Greek) followed by a sound message or noise indicating failed validation.

In order to solve the current problem visit the service center of OASA, 16, Rethymnou str., 10682 Athens. For Operating days – Service hours see here.

If you have such an issue, you should check two versions:

  • Your card is not activated. You may activate it at all ticket counters registered in the system (OSY, STASY) and not only at the ticket counters issuing cards. Once your card is activated you may complete the loading of the product. The activation is required once, when you start using the card.
  • Your card is activated, so you must place it in the Automatic Machines installed in all metro stations, tramway stops and selected spots of the Attica region to load the fare you have purchased. Choose ONLINE RESERVATION on the screen and place the card in the slot (bottom left). Alternatively, you may visit all ticket counters registered in the system (not only those that issue personalized cards).

Note: If your card already contains two products one of which is activated and the second one is stored, it is not possible to load a new product on your card. This will become possible once the activated product is consumed and a vacancy is created on the card. The check for vacancy in the card may be done by using your mobile phone and the athenacard application provided that the device is NFC-enabled, either at one of the Automatic Machines located in all metro stations, tramway stops and selected spots of Attica region, by selecting CARD

Personalized Card:

For daily or frequent public transport users.
You may store all available fare product types, that is 30, 90, 180, 365-day passes, all ticket types and money value up to the amount of € 50.

Anonymous card:

You may store all regular-fare products (short term and offers) and money value up to the amount of €50. No discount-fare products can be loaded onto it.

Multiple ticket:

You may store all regular-fare products (short term and offers).

Please note that you may only choose fare type or stored value when you buy it.
You may not convert stored value to a fare product or vice versa or change a fare product.

No. Long term fare products are always personalized.

All long term fare products (i.e. 30/90/180 or 365-day passes) may be loaded on to personalized ATH.ENA Cards, that is to those ATH.ENA Cards mandatorily bearing their holders’ name and surname, their ID Card number and photo stamped by the issuer.

Both Anonymous and Personalized ATH.ENA Card may bear 3 fare products at a time as follows:

Personalized ATH.ENA Card:
A long term fare product (e.g. a 30/90/180 or 365-day pass) AND tickets or a second fare product  AND stored value.

Anonymous ATH.ENA Card:
Two short term fare products (i.e. tickets) AND stored value.

Multiple ATH.ENA Ticket:
Only one ticket type

You may load a second fare product, once the first fare is activated. The second fare product is activated, once the first fare product is expired. In case that you need two different fare types at the same time (e.g. a 30-day pass at the value of € 27 and Airport Transfer Tickets), the second fare product must be bought as stored value. So, let’s say that we have a 30-day pass and want to get to the Airport; what we need to do is to buy (load) a stored value of € 11 or €18 in order to travel from and to the Airport by bus or subway).

You always need to remember that the activation of fare product comes first and then stored value. In case that the fare product is not enough, e.g. for a trip from and to Airport, the ticket reader shall retrieve and validate the value of the required ticket price from the stored value.

As much as you want up to the amount of € 50.

No. Neither tickets nor stored value loaded on to your ATH.ENA Card or Ticket expire.

Please find some examples of different fare type validity time:

Fare type Activation (1st validation) Expiration
1. 90-minute ticket 18.1.2017 05:03:12 18.1.2017 06:33:11
2. Daily (24-hour) ticket 18.1.2017 14:03:12 19.1.2017 14:03:11
3. 30-day pass 18.1.2017 05:03:12
18.1.2017 14:03:12
17.2.2017 23:59:59
17.2.2017 23:59:59

Other example::
I validated my ATH.ENA Card loaded with a 30-day pass on July 1st. Does this mean that it will expire on July 31st?
Yes. This means that your pass will be valid until 23:59 on July 31st that is 30 x 24-hours and until midnight of the day that the fare product ends. This is how it also goes for all other long term fare products (90/180- day pass etc.) respectively.

In case of any doubt regarding the expiration of your ATH.ENA Card or Ticket, you may check the indications displayed at any ticket reader on board or at the subways’ gates during validation. If you want to see your balance before use, try the Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) or ask for help at any ticket counter.

Regular (but not discount) single tickets may be loaded on to both personalized and anonymous ATH.ENA Cards as well as on to Multiple ATH.ENA Tickets.
If you are not a frequent public transport user, prefer the 10-ticket pack + 1 bonus ticket, that is the pack of 11 single tickets at the price of 10. This 10+1-ticket pack is available for both regular and discount fare and may be loaded on ATH.ENA Card and Multiple Ticket.

What you need to remember is that if you are entitled to discount fare, you may load discount tickets only to your Personalized ATH.ENA Card.

Also remember that all fare products, i.e. both ATH.ENA Cards and Multiple Ticket, are reloadable. So do not forget to reload your ticket instead of throwing it away when it expires.

Any fare product loaded on to your ATH.ENA Card (e.g. a 30-day pass) is active since first validation of your ATH.ENA Card by passing it through the ticket readers located at the subway station gates or on buses, trolley-buses and tramway.

Of course not. You may reload your ATH.ENA Card whenever you like.
The second fare product will be activated as soon as the first fare product expires.

The remaining time before expiration of your e-ticket or the remaining days or stored value is displayed on the ticket reader upon validation of your ATH.ENA Card or Multiple Ticket when on the bus, trolley-bus and tramway or when passing through the subway station gate.

You may also check your AT.ENA Card or Multiple Ticket’s balance at any Automatic Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM) located at the public transport stations by selecting “Info” on the ATVM’s touch screen or by asking  Ticket Counter Staff to check it for you.

The current pricing policy for the means of transport falling under OASA is referred to in GG B 2090/31.05.2020.

See pricing policy here..

Of course they are still valid for 90 minutes since first validation regardless the number of boarding times between their first and last validation.

This is an important question. If you are in Athens Metro Lines 1, 2 and 3, the ticket reader at the exit gate of the subway station will detect that the ticket has expired and exit gate will not open.

In case that there is enough stored value loaded, the gates shall open by validating a new fare

In all other cases, you ask for the station manager’s help by pressing the respective button located at the exit gate.

If on bus, trolley-bus or tramway, the ticket expiration is detected during ticket control, which means that you will be charged with the relevant fine. So, you must validate a new ticket.

Eligible persons for discount fare or fare-free use of public transport

A Personalized ATH.ENA Card, which allows you to load any discount fare product suits you better, that is monthly or other long term passes as well as discount tickets or stored value up to the amount of € 50, so that the value of a discount ticket is deducted from your ATH.ENA Card each time you use it.

Think how often you use public transport means and consider switching to an ATH.ENA Card.

The ID Card is only used during the personalized ATH.ENA Card issue procedure, for identification reasons. Changing your ID Card will not create any problem whatsoever, given that our Organization is not to keep such personal information.

In compliance with the applicable legislative framework (L. 3920/2011) for the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA), OASA and TRAINOSE are two different and independent legal persons. TRAINOSE S.A. cooperates with OASA for its urban route part.

Within this framework, OASA and TRAINOSE decided to continue their cooperation. This means that OASA’s ATH.ENA Cards and Tickets shall be still valid for the Suburban Railway (TRAINOSE) route part Maghoula – Piraeus – Airport.

In any incorrect validation n error code appears on the screen of the validating machine as follows:

  • Ε04: No entrance validation has been made.
  • E05: The time allowed (90 minutes) has been exceeded.
  • E06: The card is on the Black List.
  • E14: The remaining stored value is insufficient.
  • E18: Unacceptable product (This means that either there is not any loaded product or the contained product has expired)
  • E33:The entrance validation has already been made.
  • E44: The exit validation has already been made.

When issuing or reloading a multiple ticket, the respective payment receipt indicating the loaded fare value is issued at the same time.

Keep the receipt and submit it to your service.

Any potentially stored value and not activated fare product loaded on to your ATH.ENA Card shall remain intact. The same applies to any unused tickets belonging to a certain ticket   pack. However, if there is an already activated long term fare product, which is your case, this will expire.  If you had not activated it, it would have remained intact and ready to use any time.

The second ticket pack is indeed loaded. You may check your ATH.ENA Card at an Automatic Ticket Vending Machine, by selecting INFORMATION tab to confirm it. The ticket readers located at the subway gates or on buses display only the fare product that is currently activated and in use. Once all tickets from the first ticket pack are used, upon entrance or boarding, the ticket reader shall display the ticket used from the second ticket pack.
